SDD-UBIDS Facility Management students connect with professional body

The International Facility Management Association (IFMA Ghana) has connected with students of the Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa, establishing a student chapter for mentorship and networking.

The ceremony, which drew students, faculty and industry leaders, was filled with enthusiasm, underscoring the potential of this collaboration to shape the future of Facility Management (FM) in Ghana.

Facility Management is a profession that plays a crucial role in optimising the performance and functionality of buildings, spaces and infrastructure. It’s about ensuring the smooth, efficient operation of the spaces where people live, work and interact.

Addressing the gathering, the President of IFMA Ghana, Sampson Opare-Agyemang, highlighted the pivotal role of FM in modern society, emphasising the increasing importance of the profession in addressing global challenges.

“We are one step closer to creating a thriving community of future professionals right here in Wa… From sustainability and safety to ensuring the well-being of all users, Facility Management is vital to the success of organisations and communities alike.

The establishment of the IFMA Ghana Student Chapter at SDD-UBIDS offers a fantastic opportunity to bring this profession to the forefront of the university experience, providing students with the resources, knowledge and network to develop their skills in Facility Management,” he said.

Patron of the newly launched Student Chapter, Prof. Elvis Attakora Amaniapong, lauded the initiative for its potential to transform the professional journeys of students.

“This Student Chapter is more than an academic milestone—it’s a gateway to real-world opportunities. Facility Management is a dynamic profession that demands innovation, resilience and a deep commitment to excellence. Through this platform, students will not only gain industry insights but also develop leadership skills that will set them apart,” he remarked.

The students at SDD-UBIDS were equally enthusiastic about this groundbreaking initiative. One student shared: “We are happy for this because we get to learn from professionals. This is the kind of exposure we’ve been waiting for”.

The launch event also featured interactive sessions, showcasing the latest trends in Facility Management and the profession’s role in addressing challenges like urbanisation and environmental sustainability.

The IFMA Ghana Chapter has pledged ongoing support to the Student Chapter through mentorship programmes, internships and networking opportunities. With this launch, the foundation has been laid for a generation of professionals equipped to make a lasting impact on Ghana’s built environment and beyond.
