Thrilling quarter-finals set the stage for fierce semi-final contest

The Australian Open 2025 has reached its business end, with the quarter-finals serving up a thrilling precursor to the semi-finals. The stage is now set for four mouth-watering clashes on Friday, January 24, at Melbourne’s iconic Rod Laver Arena.

3Sports evaluates how the Australian Open quarter-finals unfolded and the semi-final lineups.

Men’s Singles

In the men’s quarter-final, defending champion Jannik Sinner remains on track to retain his title, but faces stiff competition from the likes of Alexander Zverev and a resurgent Novak Djokovic.

Sinner brushed aside concerns about his physical condition to overwhelm local favourite Alex de Minaur and advance to the Australian Open semi-finals. Sinner had battled sickness in his previous encounter but appeared razor-sharp in a 6-3 6-2 6-1 triumph over eighth seed De Minaur. The 25-year-old Australian had hoped to snap that unwanted drought and become the first home player since 2005 to reach the men’s singles semi-finals but his dream was shattered by Sinner.

Novak Djokovic secured his 50th Grand Slam semi-final appearance with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Carlos Alcaraz. The Serbian superstar is now just two wins away from claiming his 11th Australian Open title and 25th Grand Slam title overall.

Ben Shelton, meanwhile, became the first American to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since 2009, beating Lorenzo Sonego 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. Shelton’s semi-final appearance will be his second in singles at a Grand Slam, having lost in the last four of the 2023 US Open to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Alexander Zverev pulled off a stunning comeback to reach his first Australian Open semi-final, defeating Tommy Paul 7-6(1), 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-1. He’ll face Djokovic in the semis, while Sinner takes on Ben Shelton, who became the first American to reach the Australian Open semi-finals since 2009 with a 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 victory over Lorenzo Sonego.

Women’s Singles

In the women’s quarter-final, Paula Badosa stunned Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final, ending Gauff’s impressive 13-match winning streak. Madison Keys, meanwhile, roared back from a set down to beat Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, progressing to the last four for a third time.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is on track to become the first woman since Martina Hingis 26 years ago to complete a ‘three-peat’ at the hard-court Grand Slam. Sabalenka advanced to the semi-finals with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, setting up an exciting semi-final showdown with Paula Badosa, who stunned Coco Gauff 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final.

Five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek dropped just three games as she breezed past Emma Navarro to reach the Australian Open semi-finals and continue her bid for a maiden Melbourne title. Swiatek will face Madison Keys, who clawed past Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.

Madison Keys battles past Elina Svitolina to reach semi-finals. The American 19th seed fought back from a set deficit to defeat Elina Svitolina and advance to the Australian Open semi-finals. Keys triumphed 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 against her Ukrainian opponent with determined tennis, reaching the last four for the third time.

The Australian Open 2025 semi-finals promise to be an unforgettable spectacle, with four thrilling matches on the cards.
