“You Are a Treasure to the World”: Ayorkor Botchwey to Otumfuo

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has publicly revealed the decisive voice of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in securing her historic election as the head of the 56-nation body.

She further declared that the Asantehene’s wisdom is now sought after worldwide, calling him “a treasure to the world.”

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace on May 8, 2026, during a formal visit to express her appreciation, Ms Botchwey disclosed that the Asantehene’s personal intervention at a critical juncture of her candidacy proved pivotal in her journey to becoming the first African woman to lead the Commonwealth. “His Majesty’s voice opened doors for me,” Ms Botchwey said.

Wisdom
“Your Majesty, your wisdom is known and sought after worldwide,” she told Otumfuo. “You are a treasure to the world. That treasure has been unveiled to the world”. She also thanked the King for devoting a good part of his speech during the World-Meets-in-Ghana Executive Dinner Ball to eulogise her.

Prayers
The Secretary-General, who assumed office on 1 April 2025 after her election at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa (October 2024), offered prayers for Otumfuo’s continued wisdom, strength, and long reign “in service to Asanteman and all humanity.”

Asantehene’s response
Responding, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said he had followed Ms Botchwey’s delivery since her days in government in Ghana and described her as a hardworking and humble woman. “I had followed you since your working days in Ghana and had no doubt in my mind that you would excel at the helm of the Commonwealth,” the King said.

Humility
He recounted her qualities with affection: “You carried yourself very well. You never insulted anybody. Your humility has been unquestionable, and you are hardworking and always smiling.”

Otumfuo said with such credentials, he had every reason to back her in her quest to lead the Commonwealth. “I’m very confident you’ll bring honour to Ghana,” he added.
