Mahama Ayariga Calls for Trust in Asantehene’s Peace Mediation Efforts

Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has urged all parties involved in the Bawku conflict to fully trust the peace mediation efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. “I have confidence that all sides will place their trust in His Majesty the Asantehene to bring a resolution to the situation in Bawku and end the violence we are experiencing,” he stated.

Mr. Ayariga, who is also the Majority Leader in Parliament, made this call in response to the recent killing of a soldier on a peace mission in Bawku.

Condemnation
The MP expressed his sorrow over the soldier’s death and condemned the alleged military brutality against civilians in Bawku on the night of Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

He described the actions of the military as unacceptable and voiced deep concern over reports that women, children, and elderly residents were subjected to violence following the killing of a military officer by an unknown gunman.

Mr. Ayariga vowed to demand full accountability from the military regarding their conduct, stating, “I regret the accidental killing of a soldier and condemn that dastardly act.

However, ransacking homes, beating innocent civilians, and holding the entire town to ransom cannot be justified. “The rule of law must prevail, and those responsible for maintaining order should never engage in such acts of violence,” he said.

The Bawku Central MP called on military leadership and local authorities to work together in investigating the soldier’s killing instead of resorting to what he characterized as indiscriminate aggression.
