Upper East Minister Champions Otumfuo’s Peace Initiative as Bawku Crisis Grows

The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has warned that the Bawku conflict, which was previously confined to the Bawku township, is now spreading to nearby districts such as Nabdam.

This escalation poses new threats to regional stability and public safety.

During a stakeholder meeting with traditional leaders and residents in Nangodi, Atanga supported the Otumfuo’s mediation efforts in the crisis and urged all parties involved to back this mediation in order to achieve lasting peace in the affected area.

The meeting was prompted by the recent killing of Mohammed Seidu Akugri, the District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Bongo.

The purpose of the meeting was to reassure residents of the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and order, as well as to prevent any further escalation of the conflict.

Recommendations

Community members at the meeting made several recommendations to address the growing insecurity. These included:

– Prosecuting and jailing perpetrators to serve as a deterrent,
– Installing streetlights to improve visibility at night,
– Establishing additional security checkpoints, and
– Intensifying security checks at road barriers.

Collaboration

The Upper East Regional Police Commander, Raymond Wejong Ali Adofiem, emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration between the police and the local community.

He urged residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities, and question the presence of unfamiliar individuals in their neighborhoods.
