Gov’t won’t ban small-scale mining – Sammy Gyamfi

The Acting Managing Director of Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the government will not ban small-scale mining in the country but would support those with legal documentation to mine effectively and responsibly.

He made the statement in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at an engagement with stakeholders in the mining sector within the Upper East and the North East Regions.

The Acting Managing Director of Precious Minerals Marketing Company Ltd (PMMC) stated that the government would empower small-scale miners who have the legal documentation to mine responsibly by the provision of concessions, adequate training with skills resourcing, and provision of logistics for their activities.

He, however, added that miners will be expected to sell their gold products to the government through the Goldbod initiative, which is about to be established soon.

“The reason we will not ban small-scale mining is for those who want to do it legally and responsibly. We even want to bring the licences to your doorsteps at the district level by giving you demarcated areas for mining so that you can produce a lot of gold but responsibly.

“When you are done mining, don’t give it to an Indian man, or a Chinese, or even a Ghanaian who is not licensed to buy Gold. But give it to a Ghanaian who has been licensed by the Ghana GoldBod. Because such a licensed person has been given money to buy all the gold for the government, who will intend to go and sell and bring all the proceeds into the country,” he stated.
